Just got a Nexus 5x - my first "smart" phone.
https://fi.google.com
It was USD200 with Google Fi service.
The camera doesn't work well in low light, but takes exceptional daytime photos. Phone seems very fast compared to Nexus 7 tablet that I owned. Phone functions are beyond my expectations. It's my first one, though.

At first, I thought you were talking about this.
Then I found something more likely.
Haha ...

Unless you are a hardcore gamer, such requirements seem excessive. Maybe you are a hardcore viewer!

These sound reasonable.

i was thinking about, getting one that hopefully could stay relevant and last 3 to 4 years,
- and we probably got a strange situation here, where the default specification of smartphone will most probably cross and cut default laptop specification in very near future,
- do we really need so much computing power inside smartphone? gaming? or we will put virtualbox inside? run sql server? not sure if it makes sense,
- or this all for coming VR preparation? maybe

You bought your "moto g, dual sim 16GB smartphone" in February, 2014. So, after 3 years, does your phone still "stay relevant"?
These days smartphones are evolving rapidly and are relatively cheap. It makes no sense to expect your phone to last 3, 4 years and still "stay relevant".
If you always want to play with the latest tech, buy a newly-released entry-level smartphone every 18 months or so.

I still use my Nokia.
Single SIM.
900mAh battery (lasts 12-15 days)
No idea how much memory.
No idea what CPU.
~1.5 inch screen size.
I can also use it to talk to people that are not in the same room as me.

no, that is not my intention to at the edge, my main reason would be, having a more updateable and secure os, in this case, i got no choice but to follow android,
the best thing to happen would be, self diy smartphone, that allow you to browse, call, sms, and having everything under your control,

Either write your own mobile OS or consider BlackBerry Priv.

Your budget for your budget phone is way higher than mine. The Android phone I am using right now costs slightly more than RM 500.

Heard that Xiaomi phones get updates quite frequently, which is a good thing. Not sure about their security department though.

Just an entry-level smartphone:
5" FHD screen
Octa-core 1.4GHz
2GB RAM
16GB built-in storage
MicroSD card support
Dual SIM / 4G support
Android 5.1.1
2750 mAh battery
13MP / 5MP cameras
Way more than enough for a causal user like me.

Sony has announced their new flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, and the smaller Xperia XZs, with significant improvements to their cameras. Sony’s new Motion Eye™ is capable of 960fps super slow motion.
this is however limited to 720p resolution and 0.18 seconds (180 milliseconds) filming time which gives you around 180 frames of super slow motion footage.

i just did a monthly installment on pre-order xiaomi a1 (android one) smartphone,
it costs around RM 91.58 each month for 12 months 0% interest via maybank visa card, or RM 1099,
it was mentioned that i would receive this phone around 21 to 26 september, cross fingers and hope everything is smooth later,

For the Android One experiment, Xiaomi goes back to its recent favorite, the Snapdragon 625 chipset paired with 4 GB of RAM. The mid-range Snapdragon 625 processor is not the most powerful in the business, but offers a good balance of power optimization (leading to longer battery life) and performance push.

The Mi A1 is powered by stock Android, and comes with Android 7.1.2 out of the box. As an Android One smartphone, it aims to offer pure Android Nougat experience with a guarantee of Android Oreo update before the end of this year. In a surprise announcement at the launch, it was shared that the Mi A1 will also receive the Android P update, whenever it’s available.
