Spam posts are becoming very common on this forum and possibly the posters are robots and not humans. If you save the registration code as a monocrome BMP you will see that you don't loose to much pixels of the letters and with that monocrome image you have a very easy to match letters. Note also that the font is easy to read for a robot, it has no transformations. Maybe a harder to read registration code will stop the spam

I must insist, there is nothing to do for preventing spam? I'm still thinking that the image registration code is too easy to read for OCR/ICR software

I can try to make so more hard to read code, though I've also heard that some get around the image by having a person who looks at the images for the automated systems.

That's is a sadly true but a fix for that could be customize the registration form to be different from the standard, in that way the robot will not be able to register anymore unless it also has the intelligense to read and understand the form (or be human aided).

PS: And of course, customize the form could be enought, no need to change the registration code.

but surely make pictures harder to resolve...

Laughing I vote for this, though I know it may confuse newbies Sad

maybe put more 'general' questions? but definetely, questions are needed to avoid robots.

i see some people doing this.

people who wish to register would need to go to an irc room or IM or ... and ask for a sort of "registration code". and they then fill that code in the forum registration page.

or a 6 minutes tetris flash game on the reg page, user who want to sign up need to get at least a +- 10% normal score.
if they can't play tetris, well...
