Search engine clarity

I've been experimenting with alternative search engines and comparing them to see how bad or good they are. I didn't intend to make a report or anything, just for my own curiosity, but this anomaly is striking:

Using DDG to search for "tablespoon" returns no results Confused

https://duckduckgo.com/html?q=tablespoon

Really? Does everyone else also see "No results" or am I being blocked or something?

Of course a tablespoon is a real thing.

Hmm. I thought maybe the "poon" part was region blocked or something, but it does return results for poon without a problem. Confused

I tried this:
https://duckduckgo.com/html?q=table%20spoon
No results!

What is happening? Why does DDG hate me? Crying or Very sad

I have tried with disabled JavaScript but still got the same results. I have no idea what may have caused the problem on your side.

Teaspoon returns results as expected.

If even corrects https://duckduckgo.com/html?q=dessertspoon by showing results with a space between the words.

But still not tablespoon. No results for revolution today.

I use StartPage, DuckDuckGo is too annoying because of JS. You can "save" a personalized startpage without cookies (as a link) and just bookmark the URL if you want different settings.

Startpage works fine here for tablespoon.

Yeah, I've been trying a few. It is only DDG so far that has this silly anomaly for me.

But start page is annoying because it only accepts POST queries, so I have to wait for the page to load before I can type anything. Whereas other engines can use GET and I can type in the address bar and not have to wait for the initial page load.

I have tried a few different IPs from various countries and I got the same "No results" each time from DDG. So it doesn't appear to be related to anything geographic.

I tried a different user agent string and now I get the results. So DDG is somehow deciding its results set based upon the user agent string. Giving it a completely random UA string also returns a full set of results. Which implies that it is looking for certain identifiers in the UA string to then restrict results. But why only for tablespoon and not other closely related searches? Weird.

your agent string recapped my episode with distrowatch.com, if you change your user-agent to unknown version, basically, the site would not load, Wink

I found a way to coax startpage into processing a standard GET query:

Code:
https://www.startpage.com/do/search?query=

And just fill in the query after the =

That way there is no need to wait for the initial page load, just send the query and get results.

What if there is a CAPTCHA puzzle on the startpage? Rolling Eyes

Out of curiosity, what's the user agent that returns 0 results?

I've never encountered that. Do you see such a thing occasionally?

Yes, quite often actually. On my Android phone, a CAPTCHA puzzle tends to pop up after a few google searches have been made within a short period of time (a couple of minutes or so).

I don't use startpage normally. But if it does that kind of silliness then I don't want to use it. That would be very annoying.

I don't know, never had that happen. On the other hand, I've had it happen with Google itself.

So, you use startpage pervertedly, don't you? Rolling Eyes

Better write: Normally, I don't use startpage; I use it only in certain special situations.
