                  Ok. So it looks like I have to use glGetString to see if the function is supported, but how do I actually link the function to a program?

                If you want your stuff to run on everything, stay away from extensions, otherwise check out SGI's SDK... http://nehe.gamedev.net/files/glsdk.zip You will have to make import names for the procs you wish to use...
