I’m happy once again that I’m one of those guys who prefer to use default settings as much as possible. After all, default settings are the most tested ones, the easiest to restore… And it turns out they keep your files safe Smile Being too clever is costly anyway. I’ll go with cheap tricks.

ROD will be working alongside community maintainers ROOL to republish the source code to this popular niche operating system under the Apache 2.0 License, in a move aimed at removing existing barriers to entry for developers from the Open Source community and enabling free-of-charge use in commercial products for the first time in RISC OS’s history.

The release of RISC OS under the Apache license is scheduled for this weekend, to coincide with the popular RISC OS London Show on Saturday 27 October. At the show, RISC OS Developments will be unveiling its future plans for the system and RISC OS Open will be on-hand to explain the benefits of Open Source and answer all of your questions.

The results of the survey will make uncomfortable reading for Microsoft, which has made a lot of noise about improving the update process for Windows. According Bradley in an open letter to Microsoft, 69% of the respondents were either "not satisfied" or "very much not satisfied" with the quality of Windows' updates.
And for most people the updates are mandatory. So MS is forcing the majority of people to be unhappy. Good job MS.

Automatic updates, because MS knows best what you need:
Oh Windows 10, you don't do yourself any favors.

Ironically, just as I was reading this article, my screen flickered black for a moment then came back, and I now have no audio. Windows 10 (1803, not even 1809) has just "helpfully" auto-installed new - faulty - drivers for my graphics & HDMI display audio. I've now spent 10 minutes trying to roll it back, without success. Pardon me for venting my frustration in this comment.

Thanks, Microsoft. $##%@&!
Always trust MS to do what's best for you, always. Nothing could ever go wrong. Rolling Eyes

From my experience it’s usually enough to see that the main website page is of “one-pager” style with image background. Such pages are surprisingly popular among startupers who try to sell something they don’t produce, just change label for.

Websites with more content tend to have tens of links upfront.

https://www.howtogeek.com/398226/now-windows-10-has-c-b-and-d-updates.-what-is-microsoft-smoking/
Quote:
Here’s where it gets ugly: Windows Update doesn’t automatically install C and D updates on most PCs. However, it does install C and D updates when you head to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click “Check for Updates.” In Microsoft’s world, this makes you a “seeker” who wants to test these updates before most Windows users get them. Microsoft disclosed this in a recent blog post.

So, if you click “Check for Updates” in the third, fourth, or first week of a month before the next B update has been released, you’ll probably get a C or D update installed on your system. If you never click “Check for Updates,” you’ll stick with the better-tested B updates.

After these updates have been “tested” by being unwittingly installed on Windows 10 PCs and Microsoft has confirmed they’re stable with Windows 10’s telemetry, the bug fixes in these updates appear in the next B update. The C and D updates are basically a beta testing program for B updates taking place on stable PCs.

In other words, Microsoft is using people who click the “Check for Updates” button as beta testers for quality fixes rather than relying on the Windows Insider program and its Release Preview ring. It’s bizarre, and it’s the same bad decision that made Microsoft roll out the unstable October 2018 Update to many Windows 10 users who didn’t want it.
So be careful where you click or you will become an unpaid beta tester for MS, with all the associated instability and problems that entails.

And the only thing that appears to be working perfectly is the spying ... oops, I mean the telemetry.

https://hub.packtpub.com/microsoft-urgently-releases-out-of-band-patch-for-an-active-internet-explorer-remote-code-execution-zero-day-vulnerability/

Quote:

Yesterday, Microsoft released an out-of-band patch for a vulnerability discovered in the Internet Explorer that attackers are actively exploiting on the Internet. The IE zero-day can allow an attacker to execute malicious code on a user’s computer.

The vulnerability has been assigned ID CVE-2018-8653 and the security update is released as KB4483187; titled “Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer: December 19, 2018”. It is available for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7 SP1, Internet Explorer 10 on Windows Server 2012, and Internet Explorer 9 on Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft has acknowledged Clement Lecigne of Google’s Threat Analysis Group for reporting the exploitation of this Internet Explorer vulnerability. Apart from the security advisory released yesterday, neither Microsoft or Google has shared any details about the attacks involving the flaw.

welcome zero day,

One of the windows 10 machines here was silently downloading an update every night, crashing, and rolling back -- for over a month before it was caught. That's just crazy.
